We are in the midst of doing some major research. There are 2 things that we are in need of (concerning the baby coming in March...and other little ones that might come our way) and so we are looking into them...majorly (and praying for God to make the way financially to do each if that's what He has for us).
#1 - Vehicle. Not sure if you noticed in that last post,
When we aren't traveling, we only have one carseat in the car for Eissa. Hadley just uses a seatbelt around town. But, there are only 3 seatbelts anyway...a 4th child is just not going to fit in there...period. So, a different vehicle is just a necessity. These are the ones we've been looking at...
First, this is a Doblo.

This is a Besta...made by Kia. It is a nice size and can also seat 7 I believe. Don't know much about these personally...this is Joel's area of research. I will get to mine in the latter part of the post. But, it is also a possibility.
And this is my personal favorite just in terms of the fun factor...a KOMBI!! This is also known as the VW Van. This starts the hippie part of the post. :-) We went and sat in one of these the other day. This is an AWESOME picture, but most of the ones around here are newer models (2001 we sat in the other day) and white...used for more utility type stuff.

Alright, and now the other thing we have been researching...you might want to sit down for this...
#2 - Cloth diapers. "What the hoo hoo are you thinking?" some of you might be saying. Well, I will first of all explain the reasoning. Then I will give you a gander at what kind we are thinking we would like.
As we've discussed numerous times, I do like the all-natural, more simple lifestyle (for the most part). I've always loved the idea of cloth diapers. Because of all of our travels and moves, though, have never even been able to consider it an option. But, now that our travels and moves are mostly over (to the extreme that they were before anyway), we have been able to look at cloth diapers as an actual option. So, around Thursday I started my research.
These are not the diapers of yesteryear people. They are not your mother's (or grandmother's) cloth diapers. They do still have that kind, but they seriously have TONS of options in the cloth diapering world...from that old-fashioned kind to the fancy boutique-style decorative diaper. It's crazy and overwhelming. I've been researching non-stop (except for the usual basic household chores...kids, food, laundry; literally, non-stop...I even stayed up until 4am this morning doing just that). Thankfully I've had some major help along the way from a few experienced mamas. Anyway...
So we like the all-natural approach (homebirths...need I say more). We like the thought of no plastic, unnatural stuff spending that much time attached to our baby's tush. Even though I'm not overwhelmingly convicted of this (not Mrs. Green or anything), it is always a good thing to be a good steward of our planet that God made us...so, good to not make as much trash. And of course there is the amazingly astounding good reason...cost savings. More on that later.

The reason we chose this one (so far) is because it is, like the name states, one-size-fits-all. It fits babies 7 lbs. up until 35 lbs. Hadley is almost 3 and potty-trained...and not yet 35 lbs. herself (29 to be exact). Therefore, from this claim and from the testimonials I've read, this diaper could fit a child all the way through their diapering days. Not bad.
Although a clear investment upfront, it would more than pay for itself very shortly. We plan to be able to use these with Eissa and the new baby, and hopefully at least 2 more (even more if possible...will just use them until they completely wear out and/or stop working) if those babies should come our way. Hopefully we'll at least be able to use them with at least one more though.
Although we haven't figured this out specifically for our family personally, from several things I've read, most people spend an average of at least $500 a year on diapers for a baby. If you diaper your child for 3 years (which is what we have done on average so far), that's $1500, right? So, let's figure this out, using the possibility of diapering a total of 3 children (newborn to potty-trained) with these diapers...
Diapers for 3 children for 3 years: $4500 (wow)
Cost of 48 bumGenious diapers (what was suggested to us for diapering a newborn and Eissa...that would put me doing 2 laundry loads of diapers a week): around $800 (not including shipping or any accessories...just for the diapers themselves)
Savings: $3700...not bad at all
Of course that doesn't even figure in the time, effort, and gas money for trips to go get diapers either. Anyway, we are excited about this new possible investment and hope it works out.
So, those are just a couple of things that you can be praying with us about...for God to make it clear what to do in each situation and provide the finances for each thing He has for us. Thanks.

We upgraded our vehicle too, all the way to San Antonio to get it. We traded our 4Runner in for a great van for a really low price, and it's dependable with everything working. It's funny to drive up to our house because we actually own two vans. Crazy, huh? We used to share our 4Runner, but when me moved here my parents gave us their old van that they had just replaced pretty much the entire engine because my mom burned it up a time or two before they decided to buy a smaller car. It has been a nice gift for us to not have to take Johan to work and pick him up each day. So, we have the smelly, old green Plymouth with seatbelts that don't work properly sitting in the drive next to our slightly used silver van with three children's carseats inside. (We are preparing for third baby by riding around with her seat in the van.) But, who knows? Maybe God will use our old green machine to His glory. It keeps us humble, to be sure.
Oh, and by the way, I love the VW! It's so cool. But I don't love not having air conditioning. Not sure if that's worth it.
I'll be interested to hear how the washable diapers go. I feel like I can't call them cloth because they don't resemble the cloth diaper at all.
Cloth diapers? Girl what are you thinking?????? ha ha ha No really Michawn, we used cloth and some of the new fangled cloth diapers like you showed, with most of ours. Even used them when I didn't have a washing machine in the house. Loved them for sure. I ended up prefering a good quality terry and flannel over the new fangled "all in one" type that we tried. Used the newer vinyl pant over them so it was soft. The others just were not all that waterproof like they were advertised to be. We researched, just as you have, and tried many different kinds. I suggest trying them before the big investment. That was my experience. Have fun my friend. Miss you much. Love ya, Miss Gail
Well, I'll admit I really freaked out about the diapers until I read on. You wore one cloth diaper in your lifetime. Douglas saw how wet and drippy you were and told me to put you back in Pampers and never put you in those cloth diapers again. We didn't. So Jared and Tucker never wore a cloth diaper. But those you are talking about were not available that I know of. The VW - that is another story. Granddaddy Hough used that particular VW when he coached. His whole family would fit in it. His ball team would fit in it. The last one he had he drove for 11 years I think. Then he pulled it out in the pasture and stored bales of hay in it for several years. One day a man was passing by and stopped to see if he could buy it and Daddy sold it to him. I also fell out of one of those VW's in front of the house on the way to school one morning as Daddy pulled out from the house in Saline. We were right in front of a bus and all the kids saw me. I think I was in the fifth grade. So embarrassing! Such memories of VW's. But I wouldn't want one without A/C today. I don't think I could live without A/C in anything today though. Also, in all those years we never hit anything head on but many front seat passengers were alarmed as Daddy pulled up to something. He loved to shock people - like Uncle Kermit. Keep up your research.
Love,
Mama
I did cloth diapers for awhile. I was blessed with hand me downs from my sister-in-law. She had tried all different types and sent me all her favorite ones. I didn't really start using them until I discovered disposable diaper liners. (the first poopy diaper was a nightmare!) They keep the mess of poopy diapers contained and make clean up much more manageable. I highly recommend seeing if those are available for you.
The downsides I found which was why I gave up on the cloth diapers was that I had to change the cloth diapers a LOT more frequently than disposables or I would have a kid with wet clothes. This is especially a drawback if you are traveling or away from home for any length of time, and overnight. You will probably find that you will still use disposables for some of these reasons so you should really factor in that there is still a disposable cost.
Also, they are bulkier so pants don't fit as well.
There is my input for your continued research. Hope it helps!
Wow, it looks like you guys had a great vacation also!!
I went with 5 other people from our small group a church. Three of them kinda had already decided on Costa Rica, due to cheep plane tickets, and they were looking for a few more people to join them. So that's how I came into the picture! :) I really would like get to Brazil at some point. It's slightly more expensive! So between that and college I'm not sure how soon I'll be getting down there :(
Brazil is definatly on my list of places I want to visit...and where there's a will, there's a way, they say!

Love the VW...very cool and lots of room for those future kids! I'd like to request a post or two (in the future..but hopefully before baby #4 arrives) on homeschooling books and ideas. I think you said you guys were going to homeschool? Really curious about education type stuff and what you are leaning towards as far as programs or books?

I loved reading the comments from your Mother, so funny! I too have many sweet memories of the Kombi Ken's dad had when I moved to Brazil! That VW is a vehicle with it's own personality unlike all others. Shall we pray you find one that has A/c? ;) It would be a memory maker for everyone for there is always room for one more to fit in. As the Brazilians say, sempre cabe mais um. Sometimes there are 3-4 days of rainy weather during the rainy season and my diapers would not dry. I had to iron them dry, consider the thickness of the diapers as you do your research. ( Are there laundrymats with dryers now a days? ) I forgot to sign off in the other comment Pam
So glad you had such a wonderful vacation in such a gorgeous place!
It's amazing how many people are going back to cloth diapers. We're definitely considering it for the next kid. They definitely aren't the cloth diapers that our parents used, for sure! The VW van still makes you a hippie though... Sorry! :)
I am praying for the best, but hoping for the hippie van, man that would be awesome. The Diapers sound pretty cool too. I was pretty skeptical until I read your blog. As always, Lindsay and I are praying for you.
