Joel. Michawn. {Post 65 - September on Facebook, 2}

Sept. 21st:
in a church culture that would rather not know 'the real you' with your 'real problems'...that would rather just hold on to their *perceptions* of you instead of knowing truth and being bothered with anything other than rosy things...
the 'sinners' so often have it right. may the church truly learn from them.

Sept. 22nd:
~If a husband tells a wife that she is "equal in worth," but demands that he has the final say on important matters and claims that his opinion/authority holds heavier weight than hers in the family unit, then is she really equal in worth?~
--Jory Micah
(hint: the answer is no)
I got some interesting comments on this one.  So, I'm going to share those here.  It just shows how conditioned us women are at using other methods (other than truth and honesty) to be heard, and even 'get our way' as she put it):

Jory Micah:   I like your hint!

Commenter #1:  Why can't we be different? Different gender, different color, different culture. How about we           listen to each other and compromise? Use your intelligence. Your suggestion was his in the first place. Also             works with co-workers, students, children and bosses.
          LikeReplySeptember 22, 2015 at 9:07pm
Michawn Madden Ebersole  is this comment on the correct status post?
Commenter # JS instead of complaining, use your intelligence. I get my students, even my bosses at times to see my side by getting them to think that it was their idea. If you don't like what I just said I'm sure you will delete it smile emoticon. Just sometimes easier to do things the back door way. smile emoticon
Michawn Madden Ebersole smile emoticon interesting that you see this as 'complaining.' because the truth is that *this* is using my intelligence...to point out a horrible, rampant, destructive theology that is taught within our churches and culture. i'm not interested in using a 'back door.' i shouldn't have to. ESPECIALLY within a marriage relationship. that is just another way of using 'manipulation'...which is just as bad. i prefer truthful, in-the-light ways. like...being true equals.
Michawn Madden Ebersole p.s. there's a big difference between 'equal' and 'same.'
Commenter #1:  You want to be right or do you want to be happy? Pick your battles. And this comes from someone who knew you growing up. This comes from someone who went through a divorce ( more horrible than you know). This comes from someone who raised three children by herself for ten years. You can't have it all the way you think it should be. Just ask me.
Commenter #2:  Back door is manipulation! Just saying…
Commenter #1:  None of us are equal.
Michawn Madden Ebersole  i completely disagree with your last comment. and, i want to live a right *life.* being on the right *path.* i'm not going to 'pick my battles' when it involves having to choose between being on the right path or wrong path. there are right ways of doing things (Godly, righteous, Bible-based ways)...there are right belief systems. and that is what this is about. not 'trying to get my way.'
Commenter #1:  There's more than you to think about. I might have done things differently back when I had that choice. Be still. Think. Try everything. And anything. Forget about these people on Facebook and your blog. Remember who matters most. Here's a hint.... It's not your husband or you. It's who you BOTH made.

Write a reply...
Michawn Madden Ebersole another p.s.: this wasn't directed at my husband or about him...or me trying to get my way with him. this way of thinking for him was purged out of him (praise God) with our week-long intensive counseling session. but, it definitely remains in the church as a whole...it permeates God's people. and it is very, very destructive. it is killing marriage after marriage...it almost destroyed mine. and it's turning people into manipulators instead of truth-tellers.
Michawn Madden Ebersole  first of all, read the above comment...again, this, thankfully, isn't my situation anymore. but...

really? who do you think i've been thinking about this whole time...for all of these years? guess what...that is WHY i would NEVER turn into a manipulator just to stay married. thank God i could stay a truth-teller and stay married (thank God we actually found a WISE man to counsel us finally). otherwise, i would be divorced. because i will *not* set an example of manipulation for my kids...that does just as much (or more) damage than divorce. that is something i know.

Commenter #1:  So happy for you. You just sound so not happy. Couldn't tell.
Michawn Madden Ebersole crazy. you must not really read my posts if you think i sound 'so not happy.' i post things that are happy and carefree. i also post things that are more serious and point out crappy things about the church/world. posting about important issues doesn't = 'not happy.' interesting.
Commenter #1:  Happy for you smile emoticon
Commenter #3:  As iron sharpens iron could probably be your mantra, Michawn Madden Ebersole! Personally I love it because I don't really have a filter AT ALL! I get that it isn't everyone's cup of tea and it is more fun to read between the lines and invent than take things at face value in our hyper sensitized world, but spoken or not TRUTH is TRUTH! I don't want rocks and stones doing the job I should be doing. Sometimes the greatest love there is is speaking the truth in love, sanding down those rough spots, and getting to the heart of a matter! After all, the me Jesus died for is the real me, not the glossed over version that others are comfortable with. smile emoticon love ya!
Michawn Madden Ebersole Love you, girl!
Jory Micah:  Since I wrote this post I can say that it has nothing to do with "happy or unhappy," but rather an academic/theological challenge.

Commenter #4:  Michawn Madden Ebersole I agree! I have never been able to manipulate...& I don't understand why          someone would want to manipulate. There should be equality in marriage in decisions, discussions...,. I can not stand        to be treated like a child, why would I want to act like a child (manipulation)?

That is also the discussion that brought about probably my favorite comment ever.  A meme made just for me by a college friend of mine.  Hahaha.  He (my friend) cracks me up!!

OMG, seriously...one of my favorites.  Especially after all the backlash and pushback I have gotten in the past few years.  My friend who made this is very smart, very funny, keeps it real, has an egalitarian viewpoint, and has had my back a few times in the past year (which, I cannot tell you just how much that means to me)...not because we are super tight (no, most of my 'super tight' friends and family members have gone), but just because he is able to see wrong when it rears its ugly head and isn't afraid to jump in and speak up and defend a friend, always in the most intelligent, loving way.  He also always knows just when to step in and break the ice too...with a funny something or other like this.  Hilarious.  I might have to make it my profile picture one day.  LOL.

Joel. Michawn. {Part 64 - September on Facebook, 1}

First of all, if you are new here, what I've been writing about here for over the past year is the story of our marriage, how it was destroyed, what destroyed it, and how we are trying to make it work.  If you want to start at the beginning, you can go here.

Now, on to this post...

I post on Facebook all the time.  Really important posts.

I like to, every now and then, catch up this blog with some of the things I've posted on Facebook.  Why?  1) Because this blog has always been (and still is) a way to document our family's journey (Joel, me, the kids) on this earth, 2) there are some people who follow my blog who aren't friends with me on Facebook, and 3) even if you are friends with me on Facebook, you a) may have missed these posts, and if not, b) these things are so important and always good for review.

The next few posts will be catch-up from Facebook posts.  I'm going all the way back to September to begin.  Yes, it's been that long since I've played catch-up.  So...here we go...

Sept. 6th:
and *this* is what true repentance sounds like (when speaking about forgiveness from others for wrongdoing):
"i don’t expect forgiveness. i know that if it comes or not, that’s none of my business. all i know is that the only thing that matters is what i do to earn it."
how is it that tv show writers know more about forgiveness and repentance than seasoned Jesus-followers?
this is what those 'seasoned Jesus-followers' say: "well, i said i was sorry. that should be enough. you are supposed to forgive me now and move on."
MAJOR difference there. the first is the real deal...the second is from a religious heart and spirit. yet, that is the norm.
‪#‎departfromMeforIneverknewyou
Someone commented something about forgiving and forgetting.   This was my reply:
for sure. even regardless of forgetting (forgetting offenses, esp. really big or continuous offenses, is not really that common for humans; sometimes it happens, but not because you *consciously choose* to forget...consciously thinking about something at all prevents forgetting about it, ha), forgiveness is a process. and throughout that process, the attitude of the offender should *at all times* be true repentance. if the offender truly knows and sees what damage they've done, that *will* be their attitude automatically (again, even without conscious choice, but just because they are 'laid low' at what they've done). they will embody "i don't expect forgiveness. i know that if it comes or not, that's none of my business. all i know is that the only thing that matters is what i do to earn it."
Sept. 9th - I posted something about patriarchy and husbands leading wives.  Someone commented that they crave to be led...not in a bossy way, but basically they crave to be known and for someone to know them so well, they do take the lead sometimes.  This was my reply:
interesting thoughts. and i totally agree with you. just to add...my thoughts go something like this...
look at your list starting at the 'i crave to be known' part. the things on your list that you mention here...i know it's not an exhaustive list, but just a little splice given for an example. but...i personally think that men want just the same things on this list. and...that usually *does* happen, that the wife also does these things for the husband. which, when done right, just automatically looks more like a partnership marriage instead of any sort of hierarchy. and that involves, rightly so, a husband taking the lead sometimes and a wife taking the lead sometimes...depending on giftedness in certain areas or just certain needs at the time.
i don't personally crave to be led in all areas (because sometimes *i'm* the expert) and at all times (because sometimes i am feeling energetic and 'called' to lead in that area). but the areas i don't want to lead in, or don't have a gift for, i want him to take the lead. the husbands wish for the same things. and that is healthy. i mean, typically speaking, you don't crave for your husband to take over and lead in the management and decision-making pertaining to, for example, cloth-diapering vs. disposable, do you? (except for maybe the days when you are super newborn-induced tired).  :) most of the time i'm sure he defers to you in such matters...and you aren't 'craving' his leadership there. in fact, quite the opposite...*he* probably craves *your* leadership there. you know?
so...we *all* want the things you listed. to make men into these 'leaders' across the board...it is unhealthy and, to be frank, quite dangerous...as i *do* know fully well, you are right (and...it's unfair to them).
even people who don't go so far as to view marriage as an employer/employee type relationship, it is still a dangerous precedent. setting men alone up as the leader, even when they defer to you for some things, still gives them the power to 'take over' at will. it gives *them* control as to what they defer to you about, if anything. joel never wanted to or (delusionally) felt like he 'needed' to take over until a decade into our marriage. but...with him established as 'the leader,' that was always a tool in his tool belt that he could take out at will.
my point is that we all want to be led...in certain areas, about certain things. we all get tired, we all need a leader at certain points. that's why we need to go back to the Garden...*before* the fall. partners. helping each other. **co-leaders.** the way it was *truly* meant to be. that's my belief anyway.
September 15th:
this is TRUTH. this is HEALTH. and i will spread it, post it, preach it until the day that i die. we don't teach this in our churches and in Christianity, but it *needs* to be taught. instead, forgiveness along with reconciliation are, above all else, drilled into us and held up as really the *only* option. but, that is not the only option. it *can't* be the only option presented to us. because sometimes the only healthy option possible is to DISCONNECT. we have to do better at this...teaching people that this is an option, and teaching them how to do it.
thanks, Christine Caine, for saying/posting this.

I added a clarification in the comments:
notice...i didn't say to not forgive (or as i usually say, 'let go of the wrong done to you'). i said forgiveness *along with reconciliation* is all that is taught. but sometimes the reconciliation part is not possible. it's rare to find people who teach *and actually practice and give permission to others* to just forgive and move on. most religious leaders/Christians insist that you are not being a forgiving person if you don't reconcile. which sometimes drives people to put themselves in a position where the things in this image occur.
Even Jesus says that if anyone will not receive you or listen to your words, then you leave and shake the dust off of your feet as you go.

The next verse talks about how Sodom and Gomorrah will be better off on Judgement Day than those people that didn't receive you.  Ruh Roh.  God ain't foolin' around when it comes to His kids.  You don't mistreat them...and especially, supposedly, "all in His Name."   See how ridiculous that is?  That makes it even worse.  I'm sure He gets even more highly pissed about that when you start throwing His name in there.

And the next verse?  One that has been stuck in my head, that so many people don't grasp, for the last month.  The one that tells us that He is sending us out as sheep in the midst of wolves.  And that's why we have to be wise as serpents and innocent as doves.

You can't control what others do, but as I said then:
the problem comes in when the other people refuse to do what it takes to reconcile and yet you are still expected to reconcile with them...you are expected to just 'overlook' it all and be linked to and still have a close relationship with the people who have wronged you traumatically and have no actual repentance. and if you don't, you are accused of being an unforgiving, bitter, completely ungodly person.  :)  see? and that exists and becomes a problem because people are so very uninformed about what repentance, forgiveness, reconciliation really are...what that involves heart-wise and how that looks walked out. there's such an ignorance of these things...it's so sad.
Sept. 16th - A friend of mine posted an image on my wall.  It uses Genesis 2:24 and gives a little diagram.  It was good, but there was one thing wrong with it.  I said this:
this is really good. but...i'm so *aware* now of all the things that 'seem' good, but can lead to really dangerous stuff (like what happened to me). i love all of this...except the 'his wife' part that says 'complement.' i like the word 'partner' or 'teammate' better. because good partners *do* complement each other, yes...but, that word is specifically used because it naturally leads into complementarianism, which is a very very specific way of looking at marriage relationships and teaches very dangerous things.
so, while i love everything it says other than that, that one thing kills this for me. ;) change that word to 'partner' and it's gold.
So, guess what?  Another friend did change it and posted it to my wall.  LOL...I have fun friends.

I do love what it says.  Changing the 'complement' to 'partner' made it pretty perfect.

This is the way it's supposed to be.  No one else in that marriage.  Other people within that marriage (talking to one spouse about the other behind their back, for instance) causes divisiveness...and is usually brought about by betrayal on some level.  And whatever level...whatever way, shape, or form betrayal comes in...it is destructive to a marriage.

Marriage is a 2-person partnership...no others allowed.  That is another thing that people within complementarianism don't understand.  They see the man as a separate entity...and as someone who might need guidance and consultation as to how to 'deal with' their wife.  They feel free to criticize the man's wife, talk bad about the wife, come against the wife...in the name of 'helping their brother.'

Scary.  Divisive.  Destructive.  Wrong on all levels.

Sept. 18th:
"What successful people do is they transcend the issues they find themselves involved in, they realize the principles that guide those issues, and then they adjust themselves in line with those principles that will order the next relationship/discussion/business deal, etc. They go through these doorways, these awakenings...that once they realize that, they never go back. It's almost like they're cured for life...because they *get* it."
--Henry Cloud
soooo many doorways and awakenings the past few years. thankful i never have to go back.
Sept. 19th:
this is a pretty darn accurate list. all have applied in my life the past few years. i'm sure people have thought, 'whoa...what happened to michawn? i thought she was way different.' and yes...i *was* way different. but, this describes what changed. just fyi.
slowly but surely, hopefully i'll get back to that person i once was...just a little wiser for the wear.

Joel. Michawn. {Part 63 - MLK, Jr....My Brother}

I read a post this morning about Martin Luther King, Jr.  It struck me as I read it just how much I relate to him and his quotes and the things brought up in this article.

Why?  Because of the injustice we share.  His because of his race, mine because of my gender.  He was jailed and ultimately killed physically because of his (right) beliefs and actions.  I have been 'jailed' (silenced, shunned) because of my (right) beliefs and actions.  I'm not putting myself on the same plane as MLK, Jr.  But, I can definitely relate.

The article I read listed some things that always seem to go along with the fight against injustice:
The Bible is declared "clear" on a matter to oppose any challenge to the status quo.
Those disrupting social norms are said to be threatening the peace and Christian unity.
Sympathy may be expressed for the plight of the oppressed, but their methods of protest are criticized as “disruptive” or “uncivil.”
Civil rights are opposed on the grounds of religious freedom.
Those calling attention to systemic injustice are accused of inciting tensions rather than simply calling them out.
Deaths are justified because the dead brought it on themselves by committing some infraction. (I'm thinking here of the similarity between justifications for lynchings in the past and justifications for police brutality in the present.)
How many times have I been told that the Bible 'clearly' states that my challenge to the status quo is sinful/wrong?

How many times have I been said to be disruptive, uncivil, a troublemaker, 'uppity' even?

How many times have people said to me that although they are with me and see the wrong that has been done to me, they don't agree with coming out and taking a stand against those injustices done to me/the bad behavior that has hurt me/our family...and they remain silent?

How many times have I been accused of being bitter and 'airing my dirty laundry' and causing strife rather than simply calling out injustices so that they can be dealt with?  (Do these people not know that strife already exists and I'm not the cause of it?...Oh, they know...they just don't want to be bothered with knowledge of injustice...they just want everyone to put on a happy face instead of actually being authentic and honest...they don't want to be bothered with cries for help.)

How many times have I been blamed for a sin committed against me?

Martin Luther King, Jr. wrote in his famous "Letter From a Birmingham Jail"...
I have almost reached the regrettable conclusion that the Negro’s great stumbling block in his stride toward freedom is not . . . the Ku Klux Klanner, but the white moderate, who is more devoted to ‘order’ than to justice; who prefers a negative peace, which is the absence of tension, to a positive peace, which is the presence of justice; who constantly says, ‘I agree with you in the goal you seek, but I cannot agree with your methods of direction action.’ . . . Shallow understanding from people of good will is more frustrating than absolute misunderstanding from people of ill will. Lukewarm acceptance is much more bewildering than outright rejection. . . . We will have to repent in this generation not merely for the hateful words and actions of the bad people but for the appalling silence of the good people.
One of the things he says at the end of his letter to his detractors is this...
I wish you had commended the Negro demonstrators of Birmingham for their sublime courage, their willingness to suffer, and their amazing discipline in the midst of the most inhuman provocation. One day the South will recognize its real heroes.
Again, I so relate and could have written that first line myself to my own detractors.  How I wish.

There's a poignant call for reflection at the end of the article I read this morning...

So, white folks, before you share that MLK quote on Facebook or join in a service project today, ask yourself:

Would I have disobeyed the instructions of my pastor and walked alongside black protestors in Birmingham?
Would I have risked being seen as a troublemaker by friends and family for joining a movement that landed many of its participants in jail?
Would I have been willing to sacrifice my reputation as a “Bible-believing Christian” by rejecting biblical arguments used to support segregation and oppose civil disobedience?
Am I ready to consider how I might be complicit in similar injustices today?

Joel. Michawn. {Part 62 - What's Love Got To Do With It?}

I was heartbroken once.  Just once though.  In college.  My heart, crushed into a million pieces.  We were together for 3 1/2 years.  It took me years to get over it.

With what has happened to me the last 4 years I don't feel heartbroken.  It's just...very, very different. Partly because...

The person who 'broke my heart' was good to me.  We were best friends (he was the first person I told everything about me to), he never broke my trust, he never betrayed me, he always treated me well and loved me well...even in our break-up.  I think that's why it was so devastating. It was a very loving relationship...and that was hard to let go of.  For both of us.

This is very, very different.  It's not a loving relationship.  That ended in January 2012...although I didn't even realize it then.

Love.  It's a word that means not much of anything to me right now.

I know what love is.  I have it for many.  I only have it with, like, 10 people (including my children, lol).

I've learned in the past 4 years that people aren't that good at love.

We know the noun definitions.  There are verb definitions too.  This is one definition.
1

love

play
noun \ˈləv\ unselfish loyal and benevolent concern for the good of another

When you actually feel that for people...and truly show that in your actions...that is real love.

The 'unselfish' part really gets tricky for some though, doesn't it?

I've learned a lot these past 4 years.  Another thing that I've learned is that if someone doesn't agree wholeheartedly with something one is doing, no matter how in need they are, they can't show love. Why?  Because they have love all wrong.  Because showing love doesn't mean that you agree with someone 100% concerning their actions, beliefs, etc.  Showing love means that you feel an unselfish loyal and benevolent concern for the good of them.  In other words, when they are in need, you come and you love.  No matter what.

In relation to my marriage...

Love...

Sigh.  It just means nothing now.  Absolutely nothing.

Will it one day again?  Who knows.

But for now...nothing.

What did it look like when it did mean something?

It looked like me and Joel taking on the world.  It looked like us...together...no matter what.  It looked like best friends, fun, same page, adventures, passion for what God called us each to do (separately and together), partnership, trust, freedom, no fear, easy, simple, on the same team, a puzzle perfectly fit together.

Now there is none of that.  Because I know...and I know because it has been proven over and over and over again in the past 4 years...that at any given moment he can, and will, turn on me.  At any. given. moment.

And sadly, he hasn't been the only one.

That is not love.  That is nowhere near real love.

Sometimes I speak here about beliefs and mindsets that have brought this about.  Sometimes I speak about a chain of events.  Sometimes I am honest about the feelings and reality and consequences of what has happened.

This is one of those times that shows the reality of the consequences of continued betrayal.  At any given moment, it's been proven that he can, and will, turn on me.  Leave me for someone else.

Can you fix that?  To a certain extent, theoretically.

You can build trust again.  Will he?  Don't know.  But, you can.

Is it possible to get what it looked like before?  Together...no matter what.  Best friends, fun, same page, adventures, passion for what God called us each to do (separately and together), partnership, trust, freedom, no fear, easy, simple, on the same team, a puzzle perfectly fit together.

I honestly don't know.  Maybe.  That would be very, very far away...because there is absolutely no trust.  And those things aren't possible without trust.  But...maybe.

But, no matter the outcome and no matter what happens...

The innocence is gone forever.

The purity is gone forever.

The 100% trust is gone forever.

A common question:  Do you still love him?

I mean, what is love?  Love involves all of those things above.  And all of that is gone.

Do you still love a person who has continually turned on you for years?  At a time when you needed them the most?

I'm a healthy person and I know when to walk away from those types of people in my life.

Any other relationship and I would have said goodbye to that a long, long time ago.  That is why we have said goodbye, forever, to certain people.

Do I still love him?  What does love have to do with much of anything here?  Not much, truly.

But, there are other reasons for why I'm still here.  Maybe I'll talk about a few of them in other blog posts.

If he can stop turning on me, if he can do what's needed to gain my trust back (which means not doing anything ever that breaks my trust; and yes, that's possible...that was the first 11 years of our marriage), then maybe some ground can be gained.  Maybe, someday, we could get back to being partners in life.  It's hard for me to see that right now.  I can't see that at all right now.

Because when someone does things, over and over, for years, that shows they aren't trustworthy...it's hard to see being partners with them again.  Am I right?

But...I'm still here.  We'll see if any ground is gained.  We'll see if any trust is restored.  Time will tell.

But...this is reality.  This is what it looks like when you continually betray.

Beware.  Don't allow any kind of betrayal to enter into your marriage, your partnership with your spouse/significant other...ever.

Beware.
